Summary

From the author of The Bride Test comes a romance novel hailed as one of The Washington Post's 50 Notable Works of Fiction in 2018 and one of Amazon's Top 100 Books of 2018!

"This is such a fun read and it's also quite original and sexy and sensitive。"--Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author

"Hoang's writing bursts from the page。"--Buzzfeed

A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there's not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick。

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe。 She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases--a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old。

It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish。 Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice--with a professional。 Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan。 The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan--from foreplay to more-than-missionary position。。。

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he's making her feel。 Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense。 And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic。。。

3。5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ hmm, i don’t really know how to start this review。 the kiss quotient was a super easy read and a relatively good story, overall! michael and stella are adorable together :’) but, this book doesn’t get a higher rating because i simply didn’t feel all that connected to the characters or the story at all。 it was never slow or boring and the writing was really easy to like, but for some reason there was just something missing from this book。 aside from that, for a simple, kind of ch 3。5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ hmm, i don’t really know how to start this review。 the kiss quotient was a super easy read and a relatively good story, overall! michael and stella are adorable together :’) but, this book doesn’t get a higher rating because i simply didn’t feel all that connected to the characters or the story at all。 it was never slow or boring and the writing was really easy to like, but for some reason there was just something missing from this book。 aside from that, for a simple, kind of cheesy romance, the kiss quotient ticks close to all the boxes。 i won’t say i didn’t go into this in hopes of really good smut considering she literally hires michael for sex LMAO… and while it isn’t the best i’ve ever read it was not bad at all 😮‍💨 michael is so… goodness 😭 he knows how to seduce someone! i’ll leave it at that! overall, this book had great autism representation as well as asian rep! there were well written storylines about being low income and having a deadbeat father, too, one of the best perspectives i’ve ever read on daddy issues, i’d say。 not so focused on the “oh boohoo my dad left i will never be the same i am nothing without him” and more focused on making sure the characters were able to grow from what happened and know their worth despite their shitty asf father/husband。 so overall the kiss quotient is not my favorite book, perhaps even the smallest bit of a letdown, but it is definitely a good and easy read for some almost entirely lighthearted and spicy romance。 。。。more

Stella is so precious。 This book was very cute, however I felt like it moved fast。 My accurate rating is 3。9。

3。5 stars!I went into this book completely blind but I was not disappointed! These characters JUMPED off the page and were so great to read。 I loved the Own Voices representation and the Vietnamese culture that truly made this read so rich! This story plays on a reverse pretty woman trope which I also loved to see a flip of。 I initially was cringing at the premise, and I was nervous about the idea that Stella needed her symptoms "fixed" by having more sexual experiences but all doubts I had were 3。5 stars!I went into this book completely blind but I was not disappointed! A quick read, and honestly a delight! Having a main character in a romance with autism portrayed in such a real and genuine way was wonderful to see and it gave me all the fuzzy feelings a good romance should。

Oh dear。 How come there are so many amazing romances and then the books that achieve mainstream success are ones like this? I'm not saying there's absolutely nothing of value about this novel - it certainly worked for many other readers - but to me, it was barely palatable due to a mixture of highly problematic and simply unpleasant elements。 The autism rep is informed by the author's own diagnosis, so it seems mean to comment, but the early chapters in particular seemed to make the female protagonist all about her diagnosis - she appeared to be largely a sum of her autistic traits, and much of the narration was used to explain said traits to a presumably neurotypical reader who knows little to nothing about ASD in women。 Then there's the sex repulsion - while I'd be perfectly fine with a character who thinks she is sex-repulsed and discovers she isn't (changing one's attitude to sex is okay!), here this very much veered into cured by dick territory, in what read to me as aphobic-adjacent ways。 Then there's the attitude to consent, which is murky at best (could we acknowledge that what Philip did was assault? But apparently Stella is too clueless to realize that?)。 The way the protagonist is infantilised in her relationship (that time Michael drove her car? I was not impressed at all) and the macho/possessive bullshit the book excuses as romantic (both protags are ridiculously jealous at the drop of a hat and that is supposed to be proof of their feelings, apparently)。 And then there's the undercurrent of slut-shaming。 Michael is an escort, and I don't want to say I need a sex worker character to have a completely positive relationship to their job (I hate my job too, sometimes!) but Michael puts himself down (which, believable, given his upbringing), feels shame about his work and intense distaste for women who pay him, and the narrative seems to push back against this in very limited ways because, well, his clients are granted very, very little humanity。 The women who slept with him are practically single-mindedly depicted as gross, disrespectful of his humanity, shameless, or even "crazy"。 They disrespect boundaries, they don't care about him。 Only our heroine is different, but then, she is always Not Like Other Girls, isn't she。 In particular, she is - and Michael uses this word multiple times to describe her positively - modest。 What else? Well, there were some other occasional pet peeves - the male protagonist's narration had some really annoying male gaze ("porn star nipples" gave me hives), and generally made me dislike the guy quite intensely (but then, there's also flushing a condom down the toilet, ordering for the heroine without asking about her food preferences / selectivity [this is at a point where he knows she is autistic, and he grew up with an autistic friend!]) and driving。 her。 car。 without。 asking)。 Some of the scenes with Stella missing social cues also caused my embarrassment squick to activate (and I'm not that squicky, but ugh)。 The porn, which I saw praised, was actually very traditional, even old-fashioned (and also: impalement)。 Generally, the book is a very fast read, and I'm willing to give Hoang another chance, but this first impression was really underwhelming。 。。。more

Despite the minor issues I found in this book such as loose ends, the lack of significantly written emotional connection, and the ending (miscommunication trope, which could have obviously been completely avoided + the development of Stella’s autism), this book was a phenomenal one that felt incredibly raw and allowed me to derive various feelings from it。 5/5⭐️! This book has been slightly aiding me through a tough time and I’m grateful for the respite, as fleeting as it is。 The third book in this series, The Heart Principle, will always be part of my ultimate top 3 romance books。 Unfortunately, this first book didn’t affect me as much as the last one in the series。 I’ve realised I have been rather hyper-focused on my negative opinions of this book, but I’m currently not in the right frame of mind so I might update this review in the future。 。。。more

DNF…I didn’t know the H was an escort and that this is how the two leads met。 It’s likely my own hang up, but when the first scene in which we meet the hero is him opening his usual STD test results because he sleeps with so many women for work, I’m done。 I have no problem with sex work or sex workers…go make that money! I just prefer they aren’t the leads in my romance novels。

Annoyed that I waited so long to read this one - devoured it in one sitting!! SO, so good。 I feel likeeee Michael is the MOST underrated book boyfriend of all time? Which is fine, I will keep him to myself。

I don't really know how to rate this because it is not the type of book I would usually read but I honestly loved it。 The characters were brilliant and although the story seemed a bit far fetched at times, it was just close enough to reality to seem believable and I was absolutely rooting for Stella and Michael the whole way through。 Love neurodivergent queens, economics, sex and clothes? Then this is the one for you。 Even if you don't love those things but enough an easy to read romance。。。this I don't really know how to rate this because it is not the type of book I would usually read but I honestly loved it。 The characters were brilliant and although the story seemed a bit far fetched at times, it was just close enough to reality to seem believable and I was absolutely rooting for Stella and Michael the whole way through。 Love neurodivergent queens, economics, sex and clothes? This trope is getting too mainstream and I'm sick of it。Other than that, I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it。 。。。more

the kiss quotient •review•i enjoyed this book and read it SO quickly! as you probably already know, i love a strong lead woman in STEM who is successful and devoted to her work! Stella is literally stellar! i also really enjoyed the “typical” gender roles being reversed- love to see that in literature。 i work with children and teens with ASD, so i thought the author, who i just found out is diagnosed with Autism!!!!!!, did an excellent job at conveying what ASD is like through her story telling。 the kiss quotient •review•i enjoyed this book and read it SO quickly! as you probably already know, i love a strong lead woman in STEM who is successful and devoted to her work! Stella and Michael's chemistry is SO good! just two people who accept each other and love each other no matter what! there were tons of moments when i either had my heard clenching in my chest at the romance or actually had to close the book, silently scream, and think about the hot sex™️ i just read 🤣 i think i would have enjoyed an even deeper dive into Stella’s mind and daily life - seeing this written in more detail would have added to her character development and shed more light on how she functions。 overall, i think this book is an important one。 we can learn so much about others through storytelling and books like this one that dabble in romance and real life stuff, could help educate and reduce the stigma even further! ★ ★ ★ ★ 4/5 。。。more

it starts off well。 And then it gets really messy and annoying at the end。 The end kind of ruins the entirety of the story for me。 But a good 70% of it is amazing。
